Gus Newport was a giant in the social justice movement throughout California, nationally, and globally. His energy, intelligence, and influence brought about positive impacts in every part of our society that live on today.
I was fortunate to know Gus and members of his family on a personal level; for a short time, he and his family lived around the corner from where I grew up. I have traveled with Gus, in the U.S. and abroad, and been in countless public and private meetings with him. Gus was always thoughtful, sensitive, and many times, very funny.
As I stated to his son, Kyle, Gus lives on in the lives of all of the people he touched while on his journey here on Earth.
My prayers and thoughts are with the Newport family and close friends of Gus.
