Dear Neighbors of the 5th District,

I trust this message finds you well. It is with a mix of gratitude and reflection that I share a significant decision about my role as your County Supervisor. On November 13th, I started the process to run in the March 2024 election, but after careful consideration, prayer, and consultation with my family, I have decided not to seek reelection in 2024. Today at the close of filing no one filed the necessary paperwork to run for the 5th Supervisorial District, so had I decided to run, it would have been unopposed, and I would have been proud to serve you for another four years.

Serving you over the past 30 years has been an immense honor and privilege. Your trust and support have fueled our collective accomplishments, and for that, I extend my deepest gratitude.

This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for a new chapter for both myself and the district. While I am physically ready for another term, I believe it is time for new energy that reflects the evolving needs of District 5. The rich diversity of our district, with its blend of urban, suburban, and rural communities, world-class institutions, and thriving industries, deserves fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. My team and I have dedicated ourselves wholeheartedly to our community’s needs, and I am proud of the progress we achieved together. My term concludes a year from now, and I remain committed to bringing this dedication and commitment to each day between now and then.

I want to thank the residents of the 5th District, including Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, and a portion of Oakland. Your support as I served as your representative has been invaluable. Together, we navigated the complexities of overseeing public health care, public safety, and municipal services, acting as the safety net for those most in need.

Making tough decisions on resource allocation has been challenging, but your support allowed me to stay true to my morals and progressive philosophy. I am forever grateful for the privilege to serve you.

As I step back, I’m excited about the future that lies ahead for Alameda County. I have faith that new leadership will bring positive change and address the evolving needs of our community. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you, and I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of District 5.

Warm regards,

Keith Carson
Alameda County Supervisor, District 5
